Leveling the Artifact:

Strategy:

Loc - 5000 34000 Oceanus Hesperos
Mob - Night Terror. As he dies he splits into 2 more mobs. 1-2-4-8. Each incarnation is weaker than the previous. Last time he splits he chain stuns.

Spawn - Usually at night. Has been seen to spawn within 5 minutes of killing, then not be seen for 24 hours real life time.   Jun 30 2004
- Twink

Tips:

Had spawn at 21.00. Gem of Nightmares and Gem of Horror dropped. Then one night without spawn and then he popped around 1.00 am and dropped Gem of Lost Memories and Gem of Horror.
I was in group with another hunter, he used his pet, Gem of Lost Memories dropped anyway.
Some players believe that standing close to, or on top of spawn point could cause Night Terror not to spawn. This is not true. Night Terror will spawn regardless of where you are standing.
Btw: I camped the place for 10 real life hours.Trying to get this item can really test your patience. Oct 21 2004

Popular rumor that Night Terror only spawns midnight to 3 am is incorrect, he can show up at 1800 for example.  He drops three other gems (Gem of Terror, Gem of Horror, Gem of Nightmares), which are mid-level gems of use to fighters, casters and archers.  The Gem of Lost Memories is a rare drop from this rare spawn, making a very wide distribution in how hard it is to obtain (some first time, others go weeks of trying), some get it first kill, others experience more than a dozen attempts.  Mythic has been adjustting spawn probabilities according to patch notes.
Not that the /quest list can include "Night Terror, completed" and that is something else, this encounter is called "Gem of Lost Memories".    Aug 6 2004

Soloed by a level 39 bllademaster (blunt spec)
Doesn't always drop the gem - but will give out other gem items - Gem of Horror, Gem of Terror etc. Only spawns at night - at least 8 hours between spawn. Blademaster died first time he did the quest but just ran back and finished it (only one of the 8 little guys was left!!)- still got credit and drop. Second time pulled him out of the harpy agro spawn area and down to the water - was much easier without those birds chewing on my head.   Jul 1 2004

Completed scrolls read:
The Book of Lost Memories, complete story says, "The loss of a child affects parents much differently than it affects the child's friends.  Such is the case when it comes to the Gem of Lost Memories.  A grieved Atlantean father by the name of Alegren was mourning the loss of his daughter when he conceived the idea for the gem.  He used some of the most powerful dream magiks ever seen and infused a simple gem.  The premise was that the gem would cause the user to dream of some of the happiest moments in their life.  Alegren would sleep with the gem under his pillow at night and dream of his daughter."

The Book of Lost Memories, complete story says, "Eventually, news of his creation spread, and he was inundated with requests from people for gems of their own.  Alegren honored every request, and as he created more and more of the gems, he refined the process."

The Book of Lost Memories, complete story says, "These new gems didn't have the detrimental side effects that the original did and had a few benefits the original didn't.  The new gems were carried as good luck objects, and they were given to little children to ward their sleep from bad dreams."

The Book of Lost Memories, complete story says, "Unfortunately, Alegren's gem did not posess the new beneficial properties.  Slowly, Alegren's dreams became more intense, more life-like.  Eventually Alegren was driven mad, trapped in a constant waking dream that he could not escape.  Many looked on Alegren with pity and shuned the use of the gems for fear that what had befallen him would befall them as well.  Many of the gems were discarded.  What has become of them is not known."    Oct 15 2004
